The great novelist, James Michener, often wrote of a tribe of Indians who resided in a deep valley in Central Mexico. This peace loving group was often attacked by other fierce and warring tribes in a quest to seize more land and to establish their superiority. After many years of suffering from numerous invasions and the loss of many of their people, the Tribe Elders set out in search of a new home, a land that would provide more protection for the men, women and children that had been victimized for generations.

This search party of elders moved quietly, by night and were harassed and attacked by menacing foes. Nonetheless, they moved quietly like deer through rough and unbearable terrain. Weary and tired they forged on until one morning as they awakened and the fog began to give way to the morning sun before them was a magnificent mountain range, lush and green and taller than anyone of them had ever seen. With joy in their hearts they begin to run toward this great find and soon claimed it as their own.

Many began to refer to them as the "Altomecs". Alto in Spanish means mountain or high. The Altomecs those who sought a higher ground.
